Entertainment means entertainment of the mind, but here in entertainment, the art side is often becoming secondary. To say that Radio-TV is the most entertainment medium, but in the name of entertainment there are never ending serials like Bhonde Latife, Naag-Naagin, Saas-Bahu. In place of traditional soulful dances, there is an emphasis on flexing body parts and showing horrific crime stories. Think, is this not why the younger generation is becoming increasingly depressed?

Art and Culture: Make arts the basis of entertainment

The arts have been associated with us not only with the colors, but also with the festivity. In entertainment, the mind is filled with the light of the arts. In our rich tradition of drama, the presence of the clown was once a great basis for healthy entertainment. In a context of the popular metaphor of Sanskrit theatrical literature ‘Mrichhakatikam’, the king tells the clown, ‘Tell the story.’ He starts the story by saying, there is a king named Brahmadatta. The city named Kampilya. The king corrects, ‘Fool, King Kampilya, Nagar Brahmadatta.’ The clown rots it many times. At this the king falls asleep. In ‘Sahasra Rajni Charitra’, the king gets a woman killed every night. One day the daughter of the king’s general secretary goes to the king on her own request. At night she starts narrating the story to the king. Every night till dawn, she brings the story to such a point that the king cannot live without listening to her. Story in story. Another story in the story. The series of stories that begins in this way continues to grow. And one day the king has a change of heart.

The stories of ‘Katha Saritsagar’ are also no less entertaining. In Vishnu Sharma’s ‘Panchtantra’, Ranjan is also in the policy messages through the stories of animals to the foolish princes. Riddles have also been a big basis for us here. Once Dardi had told sixteen types of riddles in ‘Kavyadarsh’. It is said that later Amir Khusrau coined the ‘Bujh Paheli’ and ‘Bin Booj Paheli’ from him. Music, dance, theatrical arts are the basis of healthy entertainment. Also because they have historical, mythological, religious references and no society can progress without losing the cultural context. From this point of view, what arts should not be the mainstay of entertainment in TV-radio mediums?
